Employing an apprentice or trainee

 Employing an apprentice or trainee
Employing a trainee or apprentice is a good way of increasing the skill level of your workforce. It is also an opportunity to nurture someone to fit the culture of your business.

You must have a suitably qualified supervisor responsible for the training and to provide mentoring and practical on-the-job guidance.

Step by step guide

Step 1: Become registered

Before taking on a trainee or apprentice you must submit an employer registration to Traineeship and Apprenticeship Services (TAS). TAS will arrange a worksite visit and assess your ability to meet the registration criteria. If you are already registered, go straight to step two.

Step 2: Find the right person

Options include advertising in the local media or with Australian JobSearch. You can also contact:

Step 3: Seek government support

State Government User Choice training subsidies and allowances are available to support the training of trainees and apprentices, while the Federal Government offers incentives and financial support to employers (PDF 609KB). AACs can advise on eligibility.

Step 4: Sign a training contract

Before starting an apprenticeship or traineeship, all parties must sign a training contract. The contract will outline the rights and obligations that apply for the length of the training period. An AAC will help prepare the contract and other paperwork.

Step 5: Select a registered training organisation

A registered training organisation (RTO) is responsible for delivering the qualification and assessing competencies. The choice of RTO should be made with your trainee or apprentice. A list of RTOs can be found on the website www.training.gov.au - the official national register of information on training packages, qualifications, courses, units of competency and RTOs. An AAC can also provide advice.

Step 6: Prepare a training plan

A training plan also forms part of the contract and must be agreed between the RTO, employer and the trainee/apprentice. The RTO will assist with the preparation of the training plan.

Step 7: Seek contract approval

The training contract and training plan needs to be approved by TAS to ensure it meets all legal requirements.
