Motivated employees
Research indicates that highly motivated employees are more likely to:
- take fewer days off work
- perform at higher levels
- handle more complex and challenging tasks

Motivational drivers
People are motivated by different things. A Christmas bonus or one-off pay rise will not necessarily translate to increased motivation or performance.
Studies show that people are essentially motivated by a combination of three factors:
- achievement - a sense of doing a job well and being recognised for effort
- power - having a level of control over their work and, if they are interested in a leadership role, the actions and output of others
- affiliation - feeling part of a team and having some social connection to colleagues through external activities.
Employers should try to achieve a mix of incentives that appeal to each of these three motivators.
