As a volunteer you can make a significant contribution to a number of different areas of community life – eg helping older people with their shopping, fighting bushfires, sitting on a board or committee, or planting trees in a public reserve.
Some things to consider when choosing your field of interest are:
- what you want to achieve through volunteering
- the type of organisation you want to help
- the type of role that interests you.
A good first step is to think of the type of volunteering you want to take part in. This might include:
- protecting or promoting the common interests of the community or a particular section of the community
- emergency services
- volunteering in a crisis
- corporate volunteering
- family volunteering
- recreation and sport
- health and wellbeing
- a religious, educational, charitable or benevolent purpose
- literature, science or the arts
- conservation and environment
- history and culture
- a political cause
- animal welfare
- first aid and health-related services
- community social support.
