During an earthquake

Most injuries and deaths in an earthquake result from collapsing walls, flying glass and falling objects.

In an earthquake it is important that you act immediately:

  • If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps then DROP, COVER, HOLD.
  • Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit.
  • Do not use lifts.
  • In a theatre or stadium stay at your seat and crouch on the floor, protect your head and neck with your arms. Don't try to leave until the shaking is over, then walk out slowly watching for anything that has fallen or could fall.
  • If you are in a lift DROP, COVER, HOLD. When the shaking stops try and get out at the nearest floor if you can do so safely.
  • If you are outside move away from buildings, trees, streetlights and power lines, then DROP, COVER, HOLD.
  • If you are driving pull over to a clear location away from buildings, trees, service poles and bridges. Stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops proceed with extreme caution.
