Waiting to be housed

How long you wait for public housing depends on:
  • your personal situation
  • the areas and house types you have selected
  • the number of other applicants on the waiting list
  • where your application is on the waiting list, and
  • how many tenancies are coming to an end.
If you are currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless there are other housing options and services that may be able to assist you. Public housing is not emergency accommodation.

Giving permission to release information to a third party

You will need to provide written permission to Housing SA if you want a third party - eg partner, support worker, child, to be able to discuss your application.  Complete a proxy form (PDF 29KB) (Word 138KB) and return this to Housing SA.

Be clear about what can and can’t be discussed with them - eg they can discuss a public housing application but not about debt.

Updating information on your public housing application

You should tell Housing SA if your personal or household circumstances change.  If you have been approved for early housing, Housing SA may wish to discuss the changes with you.

Complete a change of circumstances form (PDF 105KB) and return it to Housing SA if you:

  • move or change your postal address or phone number
  • want to change the areas or house types on your application
  • legally change your name
  • someone on your application has had a change of income
  • want to add or remove someone from your application.

For an alternative version of this document contact Housing SA.

You will also need to provide proof of income if:

  • you or someone on your application has had a change of income
  • you are adding someone aged 16 or older to your application.

You will also need to provide proof of id if:

  • you have changed your name
  • you are adding someone aged 16 or older to your application.

If you are removed from someone else's public housing application - eg due to separation, you can apply under your own name and ask for consideration for the time your name was on the waiting list under the other application.  Contact Housing SA to discuss your situation.

Getting letters about your application

As there are long waiting periods for public housing you may occasionally receive letters asking you to contact Housing SA. It is important that you respond to these letters as your application may be cancelled if you do not.

If you receive a letter requesting that you attend an appointment, contact Housing SA to arrange a suitable time.
