As well as mortgage repayments, other ongoing costs for a property can include:
- council rates and taxes - eg emergency services levy
- utility bills and connection costs - eg electric, water, gas, phone
- strata fees
- building and contents insurance
- maintenance and upkeep of the property.

Other regular household expenses should be taken into account, including:
- furniture and white goods - eg fridge, washing machine
- clothing
- groceries
- child care, school fees and supplies
- credit card, store card and personal loan repayments
- health care and medical expenses
- insurance – eg health, income protection and life insurance
- car maintenance, registration and upkeep costs
- pet care and vet bills
- public transport costs.

Getting help with your finances
If you are on a low income and are having financial difficulties there are various organisations that may be able to help you with financial counselling and debt management.

Concessions
You may be eligible for concessions for water, energy bills, dog registration, telephone and other household bills.
To be eligible for a concession you must:
- be a pensioner and hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veterans Affairs Gold Card, or
- hold a Centrelink Low Income Health Care Card, or
- be able to demonstrate that you, your spouse or domestic partner are on a low income.
