When is a vehicle identity inspection (Tier 2) required?

A vehicle identity inspection (Tier 2) is required if the vehicle:
  • was last registered interstate, unless you hold a current interstate registration certificate in exactly the same name as the intended South Australian registration - this includes vehicles that may have been registered in South Australia previously
  • is from overseas
  • registration (plate) number is unknown
  • was a commonwealth registered vehicle
  • has been registered in South Australia before, but the vehicle details (for example, engine number and vehicle identification number) do not match records, or the details of the vehicle are unknown
  • is a one-off new construction
  • is a repaired written-off vehicle (see Tier 3 identity inspection).

All vehicles driven to the inspection facility are required to have some form of current registration, either:

  • Current South Australian or Interstate registration; or

  • An unregistered vehicle permit; or

  • Trade Plate (trade plate owner must have some financial interest in the vehicle).

When vehicles will not be inspected

Vehicles will not be inspected if on trailers or other transporting means.
All vehicles are required to be driven in and driven out of the inspection shed.

Other country areas

Identify inspections (Tier 2) can be carried out by the South Australian police in some country areas. If you live more than 40 kilometres radius outside of the Adelaide GPO you will need to contact the nearest police station to arrange an appointment for the vehicle to be inspected.

Country Police will only conduct Identity Inspections where:

  • you are a local resident
  • you can supply proof of vehicle ownership.

Find country police station address and contact details on the SA Police website.

After the inspection

After the inspection, you will be issued a vehicle identity inspection report which is required when registering the vehicle. The certificate is valid for three calendar months from the time of the inspection.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to have more than one type of vehicle inspection.

For more information phone 13 10 84 or go to a Service SA customer service centre.
